The Major Minors Children’s Choir have been busy performing across the region this year. Their next concert features choir singing and solos from members of the choir who performed at the Hutt Valley Performing Arts Competitions  in July. The Choir took out the choir category and many of the children won awards individually too. The choir continues to grow with a membership aged 4-14 and more than 25 children involved.

Later this month the Major Minors perform in Upper Hutt, donations from the concert will go to Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled (HVRDA). Musical Director Joanne Roelofs says “We wanted to do a charity concert that the money raised would benefit children and young people in our community. One of our choristers has a classmate who gets a tremendous amount of achievement and support  from Riding for the Disabled. This organisation has very similar aims  to ours  increasing self-confidence and a sense of achievement so it was a perfect community group for us to work with. The concert programme we have chosen has a variety of songs the kids and adults will love and shows the versatility of our choir and soloists”.

HVRDA will also have their Gingerbread Horse biscuit fundraiser for sale at the concert.

Hear the Major Minors Children’s Choir perform their ‘Swinging on a Star’ concert at 2.30pm, Sunday 20 September.Upper Hutt Baptist Church. Entry by donation.

They’re small
voices but the result is a great sound. The Major Minors Children’s Choir, featuring children aged from 5 to 12, present their first own concert this year, One Small Voice, on Sunday, June 8. The choir have been working on a variety of songs, including selections from Disney, jazz, pop and part work. The programme also has many solo lines that the children are excited about singing.

‘‘The kids love the sound they make as a choir, but are always very enthusiastic to have a go at solo parts as well, so we try to add them in – any opportunity to lift their confidence is a good experience,’’ Musical director Joanne Roelofs says.

The choir have had a busy start to the year with several performances at community events in Upper Hutt, and are always looking for opportunities to sing.

The Major Minors is an all-comers choir and is run voluntarily by Roelofs and pianist Karen Boyce. New members are welcome any time. One Small Voice is at 2.30pm on Sunday, June 8 at the Upper Hutt Baptist Church, cnr Fergusson Drive and Milton St. Entry is by gold coin donation. For more information about the concert or if you have kids that would like to join, phone Joanne Roelofs on 027 566-7672.
